Hello and welcome to the web site for The PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading. It is a great blessing for me to introduce you to my totally integrated language arts study, giving you all the tools, training, and preparation for building skills in spelling, handwriting, reading, grammar, and composition, with an introduction to Latin.

Whether you are just beginning to teach a young student, or you are frustrated over an older struggling student; or if you yourself are a terrible speller and the thought of teaching your children terrifies you, let me encourage you that all students and adults can be good spellers regardless of what modern educators tell you; you just need to know...the rest of the story!

You must begin by how you look at your role as a teacher. Modern educators see themselves as facilitators for imparting knowledge and so emphasize such means as personality styles, learning styles, and other social scientific models for indoctrinating the student with as much subject matter as possible, whereby the student is by and large passive in the process.

In contrast, the most successful teachers emphasize the development of skills in the early years, in which the student is an active participant in the process. To begin with the goal of developing skills, academic or otherwise, is to believe that the teacher’s duty is to develop in the student the ability to learn for himself.

Why do I emphasize the skills of good spelling when the emphasis over the past century has been on teaching reading? Modern educators believe that if a child can read, spelling will take care of itself. This stems from their view that the English language is a language of exceptions and is much too difficult to learn, so it is their primary job to assist a child in mastering words, and by mastering they mean memorizing words as a whole.

Of the three related skills of spelling, writing, and reading, reading is probably the easiest to teach because all you are teaching the student is how to decode what is already written for him. To this end most modern reading curricula teach some common sounds of letters along with brightly colored pictures and countless games to help the student memorize a certain specified number of words each year. Pictures so dominate the early readers that many students actually end up reading the pictures and guessing at the words. This is not reading and gives no foundation for further language skills.

The skill that will make your student active in the learning process is the ability to hear a word, then assign the correct symbols to the sounds he hears, and build it according to the rules of how English is built; then he directs his hand to write those symbols correctly as he says them, sees what he has written, then reads it back. In this process a student is totally engaged in building balanced skills in spelling, writing, and reading, and if you notice, he actually spells a word before he reads it.

Phonics Road to Spelling and GrammarThe PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading is a method for teaching the basic skills of the English language over four years - accurate speaking, spelling, writing, reading, grammar, composition through quality children’s literature, and an introduction to Latin. And instead of giving you a stack of books to research, coordinate, and schedule, I offer the parent or teacher comprehensive video teacher training on 10 to 12 DVDs per year, modeling what to teach, when to teach, and how to teach it. Add to this the completed teacher’s notebook, all the custom student pages and readers, and you CAN have the time and ability to teach this successful method.

I invite you read my article entitled Spelling and Grammar and Latin, O My! for a detailed explanation of the skill-building method I teach. As you peruse each Level, you can click on images of our products and copy samples of some of the pages. A detailed scope and sequence is also available under the introduction to each Level. For your convenience, you can order our products online, or print our order form to fax or mail your order.

Read through our Customer Testimonials and Product Reviews to learn about how others are using The PHONICS Road, then peruse my answers to some of the Frequently-Asked Questions. If you have older students who are struggling with spelling and/or reading, read through my Quick Start Program to find out if this might work for you. Under Samples and Downloads you can download a Sample DVD or request copy of your own that will introduce you to all four levels. Enjoy listening to any of my Audio Workshops, each of which includes a workshop outline that you can print. Of course, I would love to meet you and speak with you in person, so I have included my Convention Schedule in hopes that one might be near your home.

And after reading through everything and viewing the sample DVD, if you still have some questions, feel free to email me by clicking on Contact Us.

Sincerely,
Barbara Beers
